Jo Nash is the talented winemaker. She's plied her trade at McPherson (under owner Andrew) since leaving college and in 2011 was handed the keys and has been steering the ship. Her uncompromising approach to quality across the board is on display when she can be found harvesting Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in the dead of the night to maintain freshness and balance.
Land
The wines are grown on undervalued vineyard land in the Goulburn Valley near Nagambie and Strathbogie appellations, both about 2 hours north of Melbourne.
The Shiraz, Mourvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon grow on Estate vineyards in Goulburn Valley. The climate is gently warm. This region has a typical valley floor climate and large diurnal temperature swings between day and night. There is an abundance of lakes, billabongs and creeks around Goulburn River, as well as occasional river breezes. This leads to strong yields of balanced fruit, truly medium bodied with great spice and savory elements.
The Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grow in Strathbogie, elevation here gets up to 2000 feet, we see more gravel and patches of quartz. The wines are darlings of the Australian Wine Show system and leading publications such as Wine Enthusiast and Wine & Spirits have been throwing some big points. Look out for the distinctive labels as they become a staple of the Australian wine set in the US.
